Water Services Authority Function

PMU

The role of this Division is to enable Ukhahlamba District Municipality to fulfill  its role as Water Services Authority in its area of jurisdiction.  The implementation of  the WSA Action Plan is funded through Department of Water Affairs and Forestry and the DM.

Section 78

In terms of the Municipal Systems Act, the Ukhahlamba District Minicipality is obliged to carry out an assessment of its ability to carry out water services by means of an internal mechanism.  The Section 78(1) as it is called, has been completed. The District Municipality is in the process of doing the Section 78 (3) which envolves the external mechanism.

 Operations and Maintenance

The four Local Municipalities have been temporary allocated the function of  Operations and Maintenance of  water services in the urban areas.

SANITATION
Like water, sanitation is a very important and necessary basic service, essential for the health of all individuals.  There are still low levels of sanitation evident in the District.  There is a decrease in the proportion of households using pit latrines in the urban areas and the Bucket Eradication projects in the rural areas are gradually supplying the people living in remote areas of basic sanitation needs. Regretfully, many households in Ukhahlamba still have no access to toilet facilities.
